Back to School Shopping Checklist

Back to School Shopping Checklist

We’re in the thick of back to school shopping for the new school year. As the kids get older, it’s become more challenging to make sure we have everything we need for the first day of school. I have two high school students and one middle school student and we’re dealing with so many different things.

Different dress codes, art supplies, each school has a school checklist. We’re trying to make sure we get the right supplies. For the upcoming school year, we are looking to get organized and stay organized. We have shared our school supplies list and our favorite back to school shoes. It’s time to put everything together in one list for the ultimate back to school shopping list!

School Supplies

Firstly, the school supplies are the most important school list to make. No matter what grade level your kids are, they still need fresh supplies for each school season. College students might need different items than the youngest learners. But they still need to start the school year prepped and ready to go. I would say new backpacks, items you can get from office supply stores and a water bottle are all essential school supplies.

One great way to get started with shopping is to take a look at items from the previous school year. See if there is anything that can handle a second year. From there, you can determine which items still need to be shopped for. And if your kids have extracurricular activities that require supplies, it’s a good time to take note of those. Specific items could be a stationery set, sticky notes, glue sticks or necessary supplies to keep them healthy for the school year. There’s a ton of good value packs of items this time of year. They make them for essential supplies too, which makes shopping easier in recent years.

Clothing

Secondly, clothing is the category that allows your kids to show their own personality. It’s a great form of self expression. If your kids have school uniforms, stick with those requirements and get a fresh set of pieces for a brand new school year. Otherwise, take a look at the school dress code and start shopping for pieces that fit within that.

A few things we like to stock up on for the next school year are jeans, sweaters, a great pair of shoes for daily wear and basics. You can never go wrong with basics because they can mix and match to go with any outfit. It’s like a mini capsule wardrobe for your kids. This also happens to be the most expensive category of back to school shopping, so you want to make some boundaries here to reign in the shopping. One other category we shop for in the clothing portion is for the kids activities. Athletic gear will get them through their after school activities for the year and they need to differentiate their wardrobes for these categories because sportswear allows more for movement.

Our Back to School Thoughts:

Extras

Finally, it’s always fun to shop for extra items! These are things we maybe don’t need but could be helpful for the kids. Older kids will usually need a printer, while younger kids might need extra arts and crafts supplies. If your kids have a lot of online work, maybe a new computer for the family or a tablet could be helpful for homework. These don’t need to be pricy items, but we do love to surprise the kids with something fun for the new year. Even if it’s just a brand new bright colored charging cord, it’s something that gets them excited for school work.
