Spring Outdoor Activities for Kids

Spring is finally here, and we’re all feeling the excitement to get outdoors! After the cold, dark days of winter, it’s such a relief to embrace the sunshine and fresh air. As the flowers bloom, so do the personalities of our little ones, and it’s the perfect time to explore nature, stretch our legs, and spend quality time together as a family. Whether it’s gardening, biking, or simply splashing around in the backyard, spring offers endless opportunities for outdoor fun.

There’s so many outdoor activities that are a fun way to spend your time with your kids or to keep your kids entertained generally. A nature walk in the local park is not something they tend to love, so we have found a few games and toys to bring out for the early signs of spring. Here’s a roundup of our favorite spring activities to keep kids entertained, both outside and indoors and make the most of this amazing season!

Games for Outdoors and Indoors

Firstly, we don’t have a backyard in the city, we do have one when we head out east, and it’s been a blast! There’s no shortage of outdoor spring activities for kids, especially when it comes to toddlers and younger children. These are the years when little ones are soaking up all sorts of learning experiences, so toys that encourage motor skills, creativity, and outdoor play are always a win. There are so many beautiful things to do do outdoors like bike riding, a local hiking trail and of course sidewalk chalk. But a creative way to keep your kids entertained is with a great activity they will love.

For warmer days, sprinklers, gardening toys, and sidewalk chalk are great ways to keep kids occupied while getting them outdoors. If you have the space, consider setting up a sandbox or a small playground. My kids had a blast with these when they were younger! Let’s not forget that April showers can still make an appearance! When the rain comes, it’s the perfect opportunity for some indoor family fun. We love having family game nights, and it’s the perfect time to unwind together after a busy day. Furthermore, if you have older kids, you may have moved beyond the classic board games, but don’t worry, there are plenty of fun options that both younger and older kids will enjoy. Indoor games can bring the family together, rain or shine. Anything that has the whole family entertained on rainy days and sunny days are our favorite things.

Burning Energy

Secondly, spring is the perfect time to get active and burn off that pent-up energy! One of the best ways to do this is through sports. Setting up a volleyball net, playing badminton, or trying your hand at bocce are excellent ways to get everyone moving in the fresh air. We always plan out which backyard sports we’ll play during the spring and summer, and on those sunny but not quite beach-ready days, sports are our go-to activity. Even a slightly windy day can add to the fun and challenge, getting the whole family involved. If you’re looking to get kids moving without screens, playing sports is a perfect solution.

Henceforth, it’s a simple way to encourage physical activity and keep your kids engaged with nature, while also helping them take a break from their phones and devices. Never underestimate a good old-fashioned game of tag or a spring scavenger hunt for this time of year. An added bonus is each family member getting to take part in a game this spring season.

Activities by Age

Finally, just like when we choose books based on reading level, selecting spring activities by age ensures everyone has a blast. For younger kids, physical activities that engage their senses are key. Sensory play, such as playing with a sensory bin or sandbox, is a wonderful way to help little ones develop fine motor skills and explore new textures. As kids get older, you can introduce more complex activities, like art projects, nature crafts, or even building a DIY bird feeder. A visit to a petting zoo or taking part in a nature walk can also be exciting for kids of all ages. There’s no shortage of springtime fun, whether it’s running around in the yard or creating sidewalk art that brings the outdoors to life.
